Sometimes you are told things that aren't entirely accurate or aren't telling the whole story. And this is true of website building and programming.
Let me ask you this...
Why would you spend an hour hiring someone, explaining how to do something, making them redo things they don't get quite right and paying that person $50, $100 or more for something you could do in 10 minutes?
Did I miss something? Please don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking outsourcing. In fact, outsourcing is a big part of how I get a lot done myself in my business and can scale what I'm doing.. but the fact is, there are many things I want to have done or tweaked and all I need to do is...
...amazingly, do it myself.
Oh! The shock!
Maybe You Don't Have the Budget to Outsource Everything?
Many people starting out online don't have the budget to outsource every little thing. Save those dollars for larger projects for others to handle.
I'd personally rather see you spend money on getting traffic and marketing your sites.
As a Project Manager You Have to Understand the Language and Lingo!
You can't expect to outsource something.. if you don't know how to communicate what it is you are trying to get done! If you learn the basics, you can at least have a foundational understanding of how websites are developed.
And you'll also be able to price things better because you know what goes into something time wise and effort wise. Otherwise you'll have people inserting a paragraph of text for you in a web page for $200 or something. Don't do that! :)
Oursourcing is Cool, but...
Again, I'm not knocking giving tasks to others to do. I'm not knocking focusing on the things you're good at and hiring others to do the rest. I'm not knocking on spending your time on the things that make you money and outsourcing the rest.
That's all fine and dandy. I get that. Again, I do that. But it's not always necessary or even smart financially..
Here are some more scenerios where it might not make sense time wise or financially to outsource something or give it to someone else to do for you.
Scenario #1 - Flipping Out a Graphic for a New, Updated One
Are you really going to tell me you are going to run over to eLance or another freelance site or contact someone you know, explain to them that you need this done, get the FTP details to them, e-mail them the new graphic and pay them $50 to do it?
Please say it isn't so!
Scenario #2 - You Need to Get a Quick Page Up
I've been online for 6 years. Do you know how many times I've needed to put a quick web page up for some reason? Maybe I saw an opportunity to make some quick money or needed a quick way to capture names. Maybe I just need to post about something on my site because I ran into a client that needed that information or someone wanted to send traffic to that information.
Would I wait 2 or 3 days for someone to do it for me?
No! I want it done yesterday!
Scenario #3 - Error, Error, Error!
You put the wrong price on your sales page! It's 3am and you launch at 7am!
Who are you going to contact in the middle of the night that can do that for you before 7am!?
No one. Get with the program.. You MUST do it yourself!
I Could Go On.. But Here's the Reality
Not knowing something can literally cost you money.
Don't get caught up in all those online that are trying to teach you work-arounds so you don't have to learn HTML; special push button scripts etc.. These are just Quick or Temporary Fixes and you STILL might run into a situation you need to know something about website building and coding!
If you are doing any marketing online, running a business online and a website, you are going to at some stage have a big advantage because you learned the *Essentials* so you could do it yourself.
